SPC vs. WPC: Deciphering Rigid Core Vinyl for North Georgia Basements
Basements in Tunnel Hill and Chatsworth present unique challenges. They are often prone to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and “telegraphing” (where imperfections in the concrete subfloor show through the flooring). This is why Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) has become so popular. But what’s the difference between SPC and WPC?
WPC: The Comfort Specialist
Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) features a core made of wood pulp and foaming agents. This makes the plank thicker and “airier.” It is exceptionally comfortable to walk on and offers great sound insulation. If you are turning your basement into a theater room or a cozy guest suite, WPC is a fantastic choice because it feels warmer underfoot.
SPC: The Ultimate Basement Solution
For most North Georgia basements, however, we recommend Stone Plastic Composite (SPC). This is a “rigid core” flooring where the core is made of limestone powder and stabilizers.
Moisture Resistance: SPC is 100% waterproof and won’t swell if the humidity rises.
Thermal Stability: Our climate can be unpredictable. SPC is incredibly dense, meaning it won’t expand or contract significantly when the temperature changes.
Dent Resistance: If your basement serves as a home gym or a playroom for active kids, SPC is virtually indestructible. Its stone-based core resists dents from dropped weights or heavy furniture much better than WPC.
As your local Flooring Company, we can help you weigh the “feel” of WPC against the “strength” of SPC to find your perfect match.
