December can be one of the busiest seasons for most of us, especially with the holidays. It is important to remember that even though we select flooring that is durable you do still have to protect and take care of it during these busy seasons. Most of the time we have kids running in and out, and different hosting duties but if you follow these steps this holiday season your beautiful flooring will hold up for many years to come.
DOORMATS:
One of the most important steps to maintaining and protecting your floors this holiday is doormats. These need to be near your entry/exit doors for you and your guests to wipe their feet off especially during snow seasons. Road salt on your hardwood or vinyl floor can be very damaging and cause scratches. You can also place doormats outside your home and have your guests wipe their feet off before entering into your home for extra protection! Make sure the mats are good quality and can withstand the entire holiday and cold season to protect your beautiful flooring!
SHOE TRAYS/MATS:
If you feel it is necessary in your home go the extra mile and ask your guests to remove their shoes before entering into your home. Some of you may already do this because of germs from outside tracking into your home, but this also helps with protecting your floors from scratches as well. If you decide to ask your guests to remove their shoes have a shoe tray or mat for them to place the shoes on by the front or back door. The mat/tray will hold in the moisture and road salt from ever making contact with your floors which in the long run will just help your flooring hold up longer.
RUGS:
When it comes to decorating your home, we all usually agree that rugs are important for making a space feel cozy and complete, but they actually are protecting your flooring as well. When we lay down rugs in our living room, we are preventing our large furniture from having contact with our floors and causing scratches. If you do not have a rug in your dining room or have never thought about it this might be a good start before the holidays to put one in there. We all gather around the dining room making it one of our high traffic areas, and rugs can help by prevent the scratching of floors when a guest pulls their chairs out to sit. If your space does not allow or you simply do not like the idea of a rug in your dining area consider using felt pads on the bottom of your chairs so when guests pull their seats out they are helping prevent scratches as well!
KEEP FLOORS CLEAN & MAINTAIN A GOOD HEAT:
No matter what flooring you have throughout your home it is important to keep them clean, and you can do this by keeping cleaning supplies handy when hosting holidays. In the event of a spill make sure you have the right cleaning supplies nearby so you aren’t trying to clean up quickly without proper supplies and cause further staining. This is especially important when dealing with carpet of any kind. Spills are very common with large gatherings so don’t stress yourself out over them just be prepared beforehand. Another important note for people with real hardwood flooring is to keep your house at normal heat and not try to offset the cold outside with the heat inside because high heat within the home can actually dry out your flooring and lead to cracked and shrunken floors.
TO CONCLUDE:
This holiday season, don’t panic at the thought of any damage done to your flooring. Everyday wear and tear are so common, and severe damage can be avoided by following some of these simple tips and tricks like placing rugs in high traffic areas, putting felt pads on furniture legs, placing doormats in appropriate areas, and keeping your floors clean with a good temperature within your home. The most important thing about your floors is being able to enjoy them every single day for years to come. Enjoy them while taking care of them this holiday season. We are wishing you the happiest of holidays from Carpets of Dalton!
